CDC Liaison to the ATHN Board Honored by NHF

Internationally recognized pediatric hematologist Dr. Roshni Kulkarni, has been given National Hemophilia Foundation’s (NHF) Lifetime Achievement award for her lifesaving work and advocacy in treating bleeding and clotting disorders. Dr. Kulkarni, a professor in the College of Human Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University and the CDC Liaison to the ATHN Board of Directors, was honored recently at the NHF’s annual meeting in Denver.

A former director of the Division of Blood Disorders in the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Kulkarni’s work has focused, in part, on preventing intracranial bleeds in babies with hemophilia and research of women's bleeding disorders, including an effort to establish a women's clinic in a rural village in India, her home country. Roshni has served as CDC Liaison to the ATHN Board since November, 2006.

Congratulations Roshni on this prestigious award. We thank you for your continuing service and support of ATHN’s mission and vision.

Board 2009

The New Year will witness a transition in the leadership of ATHN’s Board of Directors. In January, Thomas Abshire, M.D., Director of the Emory University Comprehensive Hemophilia Program and Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, will become Board Chair, replacing outgoing Board Chair Amy Shapiro, M.D., Medical Director of the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center in Indianapolis, IN. Amy served as Co-chair of the ATHN Interim Board during its start-up phase and as Chair during 2008. As Immediate Past Chair, Amy will remain on the ATHN Board of Directors through the end of 2010.

We are very appreciative of the time and talent Amy gave to ATHN as Board President. Her dedicated leadership of the ATHN Board has been instrumental in making ATHN what it is today. We welcome Tom into his new role on the ATHN Board and look forward to new advances.
